170 Years of Making It Here
Canadian winters have never been gentle. Stanfield’s was built around that reality — making clothing meant to be worn every day, close to the skin, through the kind of cold that doesn’t care about your schedule.
Canadian winters don’t ask permission. In 1856, before Canada was even a country, Stanfield’s set out to make something that could stand up to them anyway.
The idea was simple: make clothing built to be worn against the skin, every day, through real Canadian conditions.
Comfort mattered. Warmth mattered. Durability mattered. And from the beginning, the product had to earn its place through use, not through advertising.
A home in Truro
By 1870, that idea had a home in Truro, Nova Scotia, where Stanfield’s began producing its own garments.
The machines have changed. Fabrics have changed. Fits have evolved. But the standard behind the work has remained remarkably consistent.
Much of what Stanfield’s makes in Canada still comes from that same Truro operation today.

Manufacturing takes root in Truro, Nova Scotia, establishing the mill tradition that would define the company for generations.
Stanfield’s continues to produce Made in Canada garments in Truro, carrying that manufacturing knowledge forward into new fabrics, cuts and collections.
Added one piece at a time
Over the years, Stanfield’s has invested in what it makes in Canada — new fabrics, new cuts and new collections.
The changes didn’t arrive all at once. They were added the way anything worth keeping is added: deliberately, one piece at a time.
Cotton, wool, merino blends, two-layer fabrics and newer performance constructions all became part of the assortment because they had a job to do.
The goal was never simply to make more. It was to make the right thing for the way people actually wear it.
We’ve called it Legendary Comfort for generations, and it has held up for a simple reason: we’ve never stopped making it the way we said we would.
Still made here
“Made in Canada” can mean different things depending on the product.
For Stanfield’s, it remains connected to the people, equipment and manufacturing knowledge in Truro — the same place where generations of garments have been cut, sewn and finished.
That continuity matters because it keeps the work close. Materials can be tested. Fits can be adjusted. Problems can be seen and corrected without being thousands of kilometres away from the people making the garment.
170 years, and still going
A lot changes in 170 years.
What people wear changes. Manufacturing changes. Fabrics improve. Expectations get higher.
But some things are worth holding onto.
Make it well. Make it comfortable. Make it for the conditions people actually live in.
That’s been true for 170 years.
